This weekend Transmission Entertainment put on the 6th annual FunFunFunFest, which is affiliated with the place that I work, Club DeVille. What does this mean for me? Everyone I know is partying with Slayer and Ryan Gosling and I am again slinging lonestars to the late night survivors of the dust laden festival grounds.
I did manage to have a little fun, gather a bit of foldin' money, and also to see some interesting/awesome bands right on our own patio. I was going to talk about all the music I saw on one post, but it seems Big Freedia deserves his-her own special mention.
This entertainment phenomenon was next door at the Mohawk on Friday night and when I wandered over during a lull at work I had no idea what I was getting into. Bounce music is the new kind of dance party sound, coming exclusively out of New Orleans and well, it's all about butts. Everywhere. In your face, shaking around upside-down butts.
That's right ladies, it's not just for strippers anymore, now any young lady (or man) may shake their junk in the name of cutting edge music. I took my own video of the show but it was too large for this measly blog to handle, so I had to carefully sift through other videos online and find the ones that won't make my mother-in-law blush. It wasn't easy.
Being married to a virtuoso like Evan makes my internal bar for what classifies as "music" pretty high, and these songs had no melody, no instruments, no singing, and about 3 words on average. It was a dj in back throwing out beats, then Freedia the Queen Diva hollering into a mic and ten dancing girls in their underwear.
That being said, the energy of the crowd was amazing and it was a huge glorious party! People were crowd surfing, echoing all the choruses, and everyone EVERYONE was dancing. I was butt slammed by happy dancers constantly and we were body to body with strangers and we loved it. It seems raunchy when you think about someone slapping their cheeks together in the air and yet, in the moment it is somehow appropriate. (they offer classes! really.)
I was not intoxicated nor inclined to take my pants off, but I let the crowd carry me along with it's rhythm and I recommend anyone do the same, at least once.

Shagadelic: 100th post!
In preparation for Austin's "winter" we purchased a new, ivory ultra shag rug (on craigslist) to cover our icy cold pergo floor in the living room. I think I may regret the ivory part, but I don't regret the barefooted dance parties, wrestling matches, Jesse crash pad, dolly jungle, pillow fort grass, and all-around coziness it has already afforded us.Sorry Jessecars, the rough terrain has banished you to kitchen adventures.
I just realized that this very boring post is my 100th blog post! I guess I should do some kind of giveaway, eh? That's what real bloggiers do I think.
How about this: the 6th person to leave a comment below will receive an original watercolor painted by Ruby the Destroyer AND a bonafied secret craft made by me. In the mail. I love you and thank you for reading my mommy blathers.

Brainstorm

We just spent the entire day yesterday recuperating from FunFunFunFest (which we did not even attend) watching movies and snuggling and eating take-out in our pajamas. Family solidarity day. Today Evan has to get back to it and is hunkered down on a patio somewhere writing lyrics and brainstorming in general. In the cartoon version of my life it looks just like this:

PEAR SAUCE

Sounds like a sassy nickname, doesn't it? It is also a delicious snack you can make in the crock pot. I took an apple sauce recipe, altered it a bit and used pears instead. I should've put up 1000 recipes by now, considering I cook at least 15 hot meals a week. Lazy mommy.
Ingredients:
- 10 pears
- 2 lemons
- 1 T cinnamon
- 1 T vanilla
- 2 T brown sugar
- 2 dashes nutmeg
- 1 dash sea salt
- 1/2 cup water
Peel and core pears, juice lemons, and toss everything together into your long forgotten wedding present crock pot. Turn on the 6 hour option and feed the peels to spoiled chickens. Wait for your house to smell like melted christmas and then mash your pears with potato masher or wand blender(these are amazing). Serve warm in little teacups or atop french toast and enjoy the eternal devotion of your family. Wish that you just tripled the recipe because it's gone faster than a greased camero.

Mazzy's Holiday

Our sweet friend Mazzy was born on October 31st, (and Elise!) and being a holiday baby myself (Christmas) I know how it feels to have your one day of the year overshadowed by holiday nonsense. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to declare the last day of October re-appropriated to be the national celebration of Mazzy and Elise's birth! There shall be feasting, dancing, music, sweetmeats, presents, and fantasy. Let this new holiday celebrate life and family and the glory it is to be a girl. WE ARE TO PARTY.
Mazzy's party was actually held on the 30th this year, and we drove out to Manchaca, Tx dressed as a monkey, a pachyderm, Mami-Poppins, and a umm....monkey wrangler.
It is so great to still know people that I've known since I was fifteen, though I only see them about once a year. They know me better than most of my "closer" friends, just because they've seen so many different manifestations of myself. Waif hippie Shayla, Gypsy carnie Shayla, Globe trotter Shayla, Waitress Shayla, Mountain girl Shayla, Set dresser Shayla, Bartender Shayla, Artist Shayla, Wife Shayla, Mommy Shayla.
(Those last two are my favorite)
It is even greater to watch our offspring interacting joyfully and wondering "Will they stay friends their whole life like we have?? Will they smoke cappuccino flavored pipe tobacco in the woods while sharing a chocolate orange and playing Neil Young guitar songs and thinking deep teen thoughts? Will they be roommates, bandmates, bestmates?"
One could waste a jolly good week thinking pleasant thoughts like those, best shake it off and just watch.
